| Commissioning a piece of
furniture
When commissioning a piece, whether it be as small as a jewellery box or as large as a dining table and chairs, Graham will have an informal chat with you about the proposed piece, discussing dimensions, materials and any other specific requirements. The client will likely have ideas for what they want but may wish to leave the design entirely up to the maker. The cost of the job is discussed early on in the process to avoid any time being wasted and this initial quote will not dramatically vary, unless the client requests a change in design or materials. The timescale depends on the piece being commissioned but more importantly the maker's work schedule. The design process can begin, consisting of sketches, models, CAD drawings and sometimes full scale prototypes. Once the design and materials are finalised and before any work can begin, a deposit will be required, with the balance being paid on delivery. During the making process, the client is welcome to visit the workshop, to look at the timber being used and to see the work in progress, for a very enjoyable experience of commissioning that "one-off" piece!
